Breakthrough's Breast Health Promotion Work

We know that early diagnosis saves lives.

The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed the greater the chance it can be successfully treated, so Breakthrough works to promote the key factors that can improve early diagnosis:

  • understanding the importance of being breast aware
  • raising the awareness of signs & symptoms of breast cancer
  • understanding the importance of breast screening

and to encourage women to act on this knowledge by:

  • being breast aware and presenting any changes to their doctor earlier
  • attending NHS screening appointments.

particularly in women at higher risk of breast cancer due to their increasing age.

A key focus for our breast health promotion work is women aged 45 -57 years old, as this is the age at which breast cancer risk begins to increase and women are first invited to NHS screening appointments.

We work nationally and locally, in partnership with GPs and practice nurses and the NHS Breast Screening Programme, as well as with the media, community groups and companies to spread our breast awareness messages.

A fundamental part of our breast health promotion work is our ‘Show your breasts some TLC: Touch, Look, Check’ message. Look out for the TLC message in your GP’s surgery, in the media and your local high street.
