Breakthrough Genetics Reference Group

The Genetics Reference Group have played a vital role in informing Breakthrough on a wide range of issues.
In 2002 Breakthrough Breast Cancer was invited by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to represent women with a family history in the development of a new clinical guideline for women at risk of familial breast cancer.

In order do this the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Genetics Reference Group was set up by inviting those with concerns about their family history to talk to us about the issues that affect them. Since then the group has grown to over 100 women with a family history of breast cancer, from all over the UK, of different ages and from all walks of life.
The group receives a quarterly newsletter which includes personal stories, developments and news relevant to women with a family history of breast cancer.

The Genetics Reference Group play a vital role in informing Breakthrough on a wide range of issues and in helping us to constructively focus our work in these areas.

Together we have:

The Genetics Reference Group is part of Breakthrough’s Campaigns and Advocacy Network (CAN).

Breakthrough CAN is a community of individuals and organisations who want to make a difference to breast cancer services, treatment and research by campaigning. Our campaigns include improving services for women with a family history of breast cancer.

Breakthrough would like to ensure that our genetics policy, campaigning and information activities continue to reflect the views of the people with a family history of breast cancer. The Breakthrough Genetics Reference Group provides one of our most valuable resources to achieve this.

By joining Breakthrough’s Genetics Reference Group you’ll be making a difference. The more members we have the louder our voices will become and we can work together towards our goal – a future free from the fear of breast cancer.

If you are interested in the work of the Breakthrough Genetics Reference Group and would like to join please fill our online form or contact genetics@breakthrough.org.uk or our CAN Membership Officer, Georgina Kaim, on (020) 7025 2485.
