IBIS- 2 Prevention trial
IBIS-2 is a breast cancer prevention trial supported by Cancer Research UK which is currently recruiting women worldwide. This trial follows on from the IBIS-1 prevention trial which tested the breast cancer drug tamoxifen. IBIS-2 Prevention will see if a breast cancer treatment drug called anastrozole (Arimidex) can be used to prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women at high risk.
What is the aim of the trial?
Women who have been through the menopause don't produce any oestrogen from their ovaries, but they still produce oestrogen from other tissues. Oestrogen is known to encourage some breast cancer cells to grow, so stopping its production may help prevent breast cancer. Anastrozole is a drug that stops oestrogen being produced from these other tissues. In a recent clinical trial (the ATAC trial), anastrozole has been shown to be effective in treating oestrogen sensitive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.Researchers now want to see if anastrozole is effective in preventing breast cancer in women at high risk of developing the disease.
Who do we need to participate?
You may take in the part in the trial if you:- are aged between 40-70 years
- are not on HRT
- are post-menopausal (i.e. you had your last period more than 12 months ago)
- have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. Please click here to see the exact criteria, or contact the telephone line given below to receive a trial information leaflet in the post.
How will the trial work?
Participants will be asked to take one tablet every day for five years. The tablet may be either anastrozole or a placebo “dummy” tablet which contains no drug.
All participants will need to go to hospital for tests before starting the trial. All participants will also receive a scan to check that they have healthy bones. If I am interested in taking part who should I contact?
