Treatment planning

Treatment planning takes place using a simulator, which is a 'dummy' radiotherapy machine, and can last an hour or more.
Every breast is a slightly different shape and size, and so is the place from which the tumour has been removed. Your doctor will want to work out exactly where to point the beam of x-rays and what the dose should be.

You will be asked to undress to the waist and lie on a couch while the cancer specialist makes detailed measurements of your breast, armpit, and the place where your cancer was.

Your treatment is planned to make sure that any cancer cells that are left are destroyed, with the least amount of damage to your normal tissues. A plan of the area to be treated is made very carefully and is marked out using pinpoint tattoos or permanent ink marks on the skin of your breast.

You can wash and shower normally between your planning session and the start of your course of radiotherapy.
