Surgery

Surgery is usually the first treatment for most people with breast cancer.

Nowadays, many women only need to have the tumour removed, with a small amount of breast tissue around it. But some women do still need to have their whole breast removed (mastectomy) to have the best chance of getting rid of their cancer.

You and your surgeon should agree what to do together.
You and your surgeon should agree what to do together. He or she should explain what seems to be best for you, and answer your questions. As there'll be a lot of information to take in, you may find it helpful to have a partner or friend with you and to prepare a list of questions in advance.

There are two main types of operation to remove the tumour:


These are usually combined with a procedure to remove some of all of the axillary lymph nodes.

Women who require a mastectomy may be offered reconstruction, either at the time of their original surgery or as a delayed procedure.
