Following a geography degree at Bristol University, Caroline joined the National Audit Office (NAO) in 1976 and qualified as an accountant as a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) in 1980. She held a number of increasingly senior posts in the NAO and was the Assistant Auditor General from 1996 to 2009. In that role, she had responsibility for the audit of the Economic and Financial Departments of State.
She was President of CIPFA from June 2008-09 and has held a number of other roles in the accountancy profession in the UK and Europe. She is an independent member of the audit committees of various public sector organisations in the UK and of the Audit Progress Committee of the European Commission.
Caroline has been a Trustee of Breakthrough since March 2007 and Honorary Treasurer since November 2009.
