After medical training at Cambridge and University College Hospital, Hilary became a clinical oncologist as a Senior Lecturer at Hammersmith Hospital and then Professor of Oncology at the University of Surrey and the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 1998. From 2001, Hilary led the team responsible for the implementation of the NHS Cancer Plan over four NHS Trusts and eight PCTs (for a population of 1.2 million people), before becoming the Medical Director of the Royal Surrey County NHS Trust in 2004.
In 2006, she developed breast cancer (with no previous family history) and underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This was a life changing event which also put the patient experience in sharper focus.
Following completion of her treatment, she chose to move in a different direction – and after two years as Group Medical Director of Care UK she joined KPMG in 2009 and is a partner in their health advisory business.
Hilary has been a Trustee of Breakthrough since March 2007.
“I have found my role as a Trustee very fulfilling, working with the most functional Board I have experienced.”
