World Golf Champion Darren Clarke, 41, who lost his wife to breast cancer in 2006, presented the cheque to the charity ahead of finishing runner up in the Loch Lomond Tournament.
Darren, who in 2003 became the first golfer aside from Tiger Woods to win more than one World Golf Championship, has been a dedicated fundraiser for Breakthrough Breast Cancer since 2006. He played one of his most memorable performances at The Ryder Cup at K Club in 2006 only three weeks after his wife Heather’s death, going on to win all three of his matches in what was an emotionally charged week.
The £12,000 presented at this year’s Open was raised by the Darren Clarke Schools Golf League and brought the total raised by the league to over £43,000.
Darren said; “The support and dedication from the school kids who take part in the league is astounding and it’s with huge thanks to them that we are able to donate this money to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
So many people are affected by breast cancer, which is why it’s important we raise money to enable Breakthrough Breast Cancer to continue its ground-breaking research so that hopefully one day the disease can be eradicated.”
