Step One – Where and when?
Avoid date clashes! - make sure the date doesn't clash with any big events that are happening that your walkers might also want to go to or watch, such as the local school fair or Wimbledon final! Check local websites and newspapers for dates of events in the local area. Think about who you will be inviting – if most people work then hold your walk on a weekend but if you're inviting your local mother and toddler group then a weekday afternoon would be better.
Decide on your location. Think about the kind of walk you would like to do - a Sunday stroll with a pub to stop for lunch en route, a walk round some woods with a built in nature trail to keep the kids busy or a 10 mile hike across some wide open countryside.
Then think about what you have near you in your area. If you'd like some inspiration you can find routes on local council websites and also sites such as the Rambler's Association or Walking Routes.
If you're expecting large numbers of walkers you will need permission from the landowner or local council beforehand.
Step Two – Tell people about it
You might just like to have friends and family on your walk or you might like to get your whole community stepping out to support Breakthrough. Read our tips for getting as many people as possible joining your walk.
Step Three - Start Fundraising!
The money you raise from Stepping Out will help us fight for a future free from the fear of breast cancer. The more you raise, the longer we can continue to save lives. Use our fundraising tips to get you started.
