Ashwell Crocus Walk 2010
The sun shines on Ashwell.
PatsyThank you for a brilliant walk on Saturday. Barry and I really enjoyed our walk and the weather was so good to us.
The 13th March 2010 was the 8th annual Crocus Walk organised by the North Herts & South Cambs group. The day saw a record 140 people turn up and walk in honour of Mother’s Day. The walk even managed to attract the interest of the local press who took photos as the group left. These photos appeared in several local papers and also the Cambridge Evening news.
The weather was sunny and on route many gardens were adorned by little white and purple crocuses. The 5 mile route took walkers through beautiful landscape and across quaint bridges. Luckily the sun had dried up some of the mud, so conditions were more favourable than the practice walks.
Once returned to the hall walkers were treated to an array of sandwiches and wonderful cakes.
Hayley Mckenzie, organiser says "Our thanks go to the tea ladies who stayed back during the walk to get all the goodies plated up and ready; also to all the wonderful people who made and donated all the fabulous cakes".
While the walkers refreshed themselves raffle tickets were sold and competitions run, including 'Guess the Number of Pins on the T-Shirt' and 'Name the Koala'.
Val Whyborn, organiser "People were very generous this year with raffle prizes, including the village butcher Mr Crump, who donated a free range chicken. A huge thank you to all who donated prizes, both for this event and for our tombola".
The raffle raised a brilliant £164.00, the group’s highest sum so far which is a reflection of the great prizes on offer. The lucky winner of the Pink Ribbon Cake (kindly donated by Clare Coningsby) was won by Andy Wadley who then very kindly donated the cake back to be sold at his place of work the following week; this raised at further £15.00.
The total number of pins of the t-shirt was 118; the closest guess was 120 by Fiona Jobson who won a pink monkey and chocolates. The announcement of the Koala’s name will be made on April 30th.
So far the event has raised £1614.00, but once the people who have collected sponsorship have sent their money in, the group are confident that this will exceed £2000. The group urges people to send this money in a.s.a.p. to enable a final figure to be issued and also the prizes for the Highest Fund raisers to be awarded.
