Alcohol followed by cigarettes are the next things that also appear to affect hormone levels.
Dr Susie Jennings, Senior Policy Officer at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “This research provides further evidence that alcohol intake and weight may affect hormone levels, which in turn can influence a woman's breast cancer risk. It is important to understand how breast cancers grow and develop and we welcome research in this area.
"Women can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting their alcohol consumption and partaking in regular physical activity.”
