The research was carried out by Dr Michelle Harvie at Genesis Prevention Centre in Manchester and published in The International Journal of Obesity.
Dr Caitlin Palframan, Policy Manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle are integral to helping women reduce the risk of breast cancer.
"This research suggests an extreme diet two days a week may be as beneficial as a steady diet for seven. However, this was a short term study so it is impossible to know what long term health implications an extreme diet may have.
"How women diet is a personal choice and they should consult their GP if they are considering a dramatic weight loss programme.”
