Gene testing could improve screening programme in the future

Calculating individual genetic cancer risk and taking age into account could mean fewer women would need to be screened for breast cancer, according to research published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Dr Caitlin Palframan, Senior Policy and Information Officer says,

“Early detection is key to improving the chances of successful breast cancer treatment but the idea of selective screening should be viewed with caution. We need to have a much better understanding of how genetic and lifestyle factors work together to affect breast cancer risk before such an approach could be recommended.

For most women getting older is their biggest risk factor and that's why we urge all women aged 50 and over to attend their NHS Breast Screening appointments.  For more information visit www.breakthrough.org.uk
