Since taking up the role in August 1999, Professor Ashworth has led the Research Centre to tremendous heights, positioning it as a world class centre of excellence. His new role is testament to that success and, as Chief Executive, patients suffering from all types of cancer will benefit from his vision and innovative approach to translational research.
Alan has been a talented, visionary and highly respected Director of our research work and has inspired scientists and supporters alike. He has led the Centre to many significant achievements in its mission to find new ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent breast cancer. Indeed, the development of a new therapeutic approach to tackling cancer, involving PARP inhibitors, is already benefiting patients. Through Alan’s ongoing involvement in the work of the Research Centre, people affected by breast cancer will continue to benefit from his expertise and insight in tackling this disease.
An international search will soon be underway to find an outstanding scientist to succeed Alan and continue to build on the ground breaking work of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre. In the meantime, we will ensure that there is no let up in the fight against breast cancer. Consequently, we are delighted that Professor Clare Isacke has agreed to take on the role of interim Director from 17 January. Professor Isacke joined the Research Centre in 2001 to lead the Molecular Cell Biology Team and since 2004 has made an enormous contribution as Deputy Director of the Research Centre.
