The campaign, led by Macmillan Cancer Support and backed by 30 cancer charities, top clinicians and Peers, argues that Government plans in the Welfare Reform Bill would push some cancer patients into poverty.

The House of Lords voted on Wednesday (11 January 2012) to protect cancer patients by rejecting Government proposals, including to limit eligibility for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). This decision may yet be challenged by the Government at a later stage.

Chris Askew, Chief Executive of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “This is good news for cancer patients and shows their voice has been heard. Cancer charities are united that these proposals are unfair and that is why we are pleased the Lords have rejected them.

“This may not be the end of the issue but we hope the Government will now listen to and support the needs of cancer patients.”
