TRUE STORY

Dorothy Head

Breakthrough Group Representative

As a breast cancer survivor, without a family of my own, watching young female family friends growing up, I felt the most tangible legacy I could leave was financial support from my estate for the charity that has meant so much to me over the last 11 eleven years.

Dorothy Head, Breakthrough Group Representative
In April 1993, I was one of a number of ladies approached by the young charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer to begin a group in Yorkshire - and the South Yorkshire Group was born.

We are now a team of 15 sufferers, non sufferers, friends and those interested in supporting research into breast cancer, its causes and treatments. Our aim is to have fun fundraising. Over the years, we've walked, run, collected, held everything from coffee mornings to Indian evenings, ladies dinners nights to balls, packed shopping bags, sold clothes and have raised over £120,000.

I felt honoured to be asked by Breakthrough Breast Cancer on their behalf to give talks, address the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer and speak at political fringe meetings. I've watched with delight as Breakthrough has grown into the significant charity it is today, while keeping the friendly, family feeling it had eleven years ago.
