Pat Fairbrother
I have been a breast cancer advocate since April 1999 following diagnosis of the disease.

I wanted to join other women who were dedicated to making a difference to women’s lives affected by breast cancer.

Through attending training events and meetings I learnt many new skills including how to be an effective cancer service user representative. I felt confident enough to go ahead and meet my MP and enlist his help on campaigning.

I represented the Campaigns & Advocacy Network at the National Breast Cancer Coalition conference in Washington earlier this year. I met hundreds of inspirational women who are fighting for best practice in breast cancer services and are intent on making their voices heard.

After making contacts locally in cancer services and becoming a patient representative I took a paid post and have been working for the past two years as a cancer patient/carer facilitator in my local cancer network. I also sit on several cancer working groups alongside health professionals, including those in breast services.
