Colm Nestor graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BSc. in Natural Sciences. Following graduation he completed an H.Dip in Computer Science in University College Cork, Ireland and an MRes in Bioinformatics at the University of York, UK.
In 2001, Colm began work as a bioinformatics specialist for the biotech company DeCODE Genetics in Reykjavik, Iceland. Dr. Nestor provided bespoke bioinformatics support to numerous disease research groups studying the genetic basis of complex diseases including schizophrenia, diabetes, and myocardial infarction.
In 2003, Dr. Nestor began a 4-year Wellcome Trust PhD in the University of Glasgow, UK. Under the supervision of Professor Darren Monckton, Colm used both computer-modelling techniques and laboratory-based approaches to examine the relationship between mutation instability and disease severity in Myotonic Dystrophy.
In April 2008, Dr Nestor joined the Edinburgh Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit based at the Western General Hospital. Working with Dr Richard Meehan, Colm is investigating the complex role of epigenetics in breast cancer initiation and progression.
