Our Unique Strategy
Over the last ten years Breakthrough has developed an enviable track record of success in breast cancer research, with a reputation for funding pioneering, world-class research that is rapidly translated to the clinic for patient benefit. As we look to the next ten years, our research strategy will shape the future direction of Breakthrough’s research and inform breast cancer research internationally.
Under the overarching goal of a personalised approach to medicine, the strategy is defined by four priority areas. These four areas – risk prediction and prevention; early detection; diagnosis, prognosis and predicting response; and targeted treatments – are where Breakthrough will focus its resources to make most impact for people at risk of and affected by breast cancer. This will be underpinned by continued significant investment in basic biological research, which is where we believe the future breakthroughs will come from.
We will achieve this through our commitment to fund outstanding and talented individuals with a strong scientific vision. Providing them with long-term support to develop their research ideas, build critical mass at our centres of excellence and form effective partnerships within the Breakthrough scientific network and beyond. Our approach to funding is defined by six criteria or key success ingredients – our ethos to research that will ensure we fund research of the highest quality.
We are determined to maximise our impact over the next five to ten years and make even greater advances towards removing the fear of breast cancer and improving patients’ survival of the disease.
