Comment from the Research Centre Director
Dear Friends,
The past few months have been an exciting time for us. On January 16th we launched our latest clinical trial, the Triple Negative Trial, another study that has arisen from the groundbreaking research undertaken by scientists here at the Breakthrough Research Centre. In particular, it is testament to the hard work of Dr Andy Tutt, the Director of our new Breakthrough Research Unit at King’s College London. This trial is particularly exciting as it shows we are trying to translate laboratory research directly into benefits for women with breast cancer. Tumour samples from women treated in the study may enable us to work out why some women do better on some treatments rather than others. This will help us to ensure that, in future, the right treatment is given to every woman, maximising benefit.
Also in January, I attended Disco & Diamonds at which a staggering
£1.5 million was raised, bringing the Breakthrough Generations Appeal to a hugely successful climax. I’m pleased to say that we’ve also been enormously successful in recruiting women to this study, and over 90,000 women of all ages are already taking part. Recruitment will be closing soon, so this may be your last chance to take part in the most comprehensive study into the causes of breast cancer ever undertaken.

Most recently, in February, my research team announced the results
of two of our studies into why some cancers become resistant to treatment. We believe our research is an important step forward in our understanding of why treatments stop working in some women. Our hope is that this work will help uncover ways to overcome this problem, improving the chance of successful treatment for women in the years to come.
All the best,
Alan
