A letter from a supporter
Dear Breakthrough,
I am holding a 'bra run' event in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and I thought I’d write in to tell you a little bit more about it.
The run will be broken up into different parts of the country, enabling people nationwide to take part. My bra run will be taking place on September 7 2008.
The idea is for each bike, not person, to donate £5 to go on a ride out. I’ve run this event for two years in a row and I have found that people have always wanted to do something after the run on their return. So ideas have ranged from a hog-roast, a band, or auction – I am keen for any new ideas.
I'm a keen biker and being ex-Army, a staunch supporter of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, and got into this when my sister did the Aviva weekend in 2006. Originally I was just going to throw a tenner into the kitty to help her, but when my parents also started raising money with coffee mornings, tombola, raffles etc, I knew I had to do more!
I've had an ex-girlfriend die from breast cancer when she was in her mid-thirties, and also a friend's wife was diagnosed recently, and she had to have a double mastectomy and hysterectomy. So I am fully aware of the severity of breast cancer and what effect it can have on people’s lives.
In 2006, the first year of the bra run, I had around 30 riders turn up, then, as the ground began to shake, another 20 plus bikes turned up from Bristol and we raised £342. In 2007, with the Legion Riders helping out with marshalling, and with greater publicity, 72 riders took part and so beating the previous year’s target and raising a total of £720.
So for 2008 we want to go even further. In the past the best way to raise the funds was to ask people to see if they could be sponsored, by family and work colleagues. So for 2008 if each rider raised £10 in sponsorship there is the potential to raise over a thousand pounds!
If you would like to find out more about my bra run or even join us,

Many thanks,
Dave
