Investigating the causes of breast cancer in men
Breakthrough has launched the largest-ever study into male breast cancer, which aims to pinpoint potential causes of the disease by investigating genetic, environmental and behavioural risk factors thought to be involved.
Around 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. By understanding the causes, scientists can start to develop new ways to prevent the disease and so provide better information about who is most at risk.
The Male Breast Cancer Study, led by Professors Anthony Swerdlow and Alan Ashworth (the same team who are leading the Breakthrough Generations Study), aims to identify the causes of breast cancer in men. The study has now started recruiting patients and over the next five years will follow 1,000 men diagnosed with breast cancer in England and Wales.
