Presenting world-class breast cancer research
The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is the biggest breast cancer conference in the world. Each year, over 8,000 delegates, including doctors, scientists, and patient representatives, come together to discuss the latest developments in breast cancer research.
We are extremely pleased to report that at the recent symposium in December 2007, Breakthrough was well represented. Several scientists presented their latest research findings in the poster sessions and two others, Dr Susana Banerjee and Professor Mitch Dowsett, were invited to speak about their work. Dr Susana Banerjee spoke about her research into whether a drug called Vatalanib, which is currently being tested as a treatment for bowel cancer patients, could also be an effective treatment for hormone sensitive breast cancer.
Working with colleagues under the supervision of Professor Mitch Dowsett and Dr Lesley Ann Martin, Dr Banerjee has found that Vatalanib seems to work in two different ways to stop tumours growing and spreading.
The highlight of the symposium was Professor Mitch Dowsett being awarded the William L. McGuire Memorial Lecture. He was awarded this honour in recognition of the huge contribution he has made over the past 20 years to improving both our understanding and the treatment of hormonesensitive breast cancer
