The roll out of digital mammography in Scotland was due to begin this year. In order to ensure that it is implemented effectively there is currently a full national review of the breast screening service taking place. This began in April this year and will report in the spring of 2012.
Digital mammography which uses digital images, rather than the traditional film images, has advantages because it offers the screening programme more flexibility as images can be view from different locations. It also brings some major challenges such as cost, the need for new IT equipment, and infrastructure design. This is in part why the national review of the Service is being carried out.
Digital mammography, and screening in general, is a key area of interest for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and we are contributing to this review.
