Breakthrough Genetics Reference Group
The Genetics Reference Group has played a vital role in informing Breakthrough on a wide range of issues.
In 2002 Breakthrough Breast Cancer was invited by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to represent women with a family history in the development of a new clinical guideline for women at risk of familial breast cancer.
In order do this, the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Genetics Reference Group was set up by inviting those with concerns about their family history to talk to us about the issues that affected them. Since then the group has grown to over 100 women with a family history of breast cancer, from all over the UK, of different ages and from all walks of life.
The group receive a quarterly newsletter which includes personal stories, developments and news relevant to women with a family hisotry of breast cancer.
The Genetics Reference Group play a vital role in informing Breakthrough on a wide range of issues and in helping us to constructively focus our work in these areas.
The Genetics Reference Group is part of Breakthrough’s Campaigns and Advocacy Network (CAN).
Breakthrough CAN is a community of individuals and organisations who want to make a difference to breast cancer services, treatment and research by campaigning. Our campaigns include improving services for women with a family history of breast cancer.
Breakthrough would like to ensure that our genetics policy, campaigning and information activities continue to reflect the views of the people with a family history of breast cancer. The Breakthrough Genetics Reference Group provides one of our most valuable resources to achieve this.
By joining Breakthrough’s Genetics Reference Group you’ll be making a difference. The more members we have the louder our voices will become and we can work together towards our goal – a future free from the fear of breast cancer.

Together we have:
- influenced the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines on hereditary breast cancer published in May 2004.
- advised the Human Genetics Commission (HGC) policy on whether genetic tests should be available over the counter.
- provided advice to the Association for British Insurers (ABI) about whether their proposed leaflet on genetics and insurance is patient friendly.
- advised the Genetics and Insurance Committee whether genetics tests should be used to set insurance premiums.
- identified a need for clear, accessible, up-to-date information on hereditary breast cancer.
