Improving breast cancer services - The Service Pledge for Breast Cancer

The aim of this campaign is to make service improvements in local breast units and encourage and enable patient involvement in this process.

Background

The incentive to do the Pledge was the patients. We thought how would we want to be treated if we were the patients.
Pledge Lead from one of the pilot sites.
Breakthrough has developed the Service Pledge for Breast Cancer as a tool that enables patients and health professionals to work in partnership towards better local breast cancer services. It sets out the standards Breakthrough believes every hospital breast unit should meet and asks health professionals to work towards meeting these standards, while consulting patients about what improvements matter most to them.

The Service Pledge serves as a local reference tool to inform those affected by breast cancer what they should expect from their hospital and as a tool for health professionals to consider how to offer an even better service to their patients.

There are currently six breast units in England which have developed local versions of the Service Pledge and distribute it to newly diagnosed patients:

  • Basildon Hospital, Essex
  • Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, East Yorkshire
  • Wycombe Hospital, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
  • Ipswich Hospital, Suffolk
  • Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire
  • Nobles Hospital, Isle of Man

We are currently running a second wave of the Service Pledge involving ten sites in England and Wales.

The Service Pledge sites are:

England
  • Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, North Yorkshire
  • Grantham Hospital, Lincolnshire
  • Harley Street Clinic, London
  • Lincoln Hospital, Lincolnshire
  • Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital
  • Pilgrim Hospital, Lincolnshire
  • Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, Surrey
  • Scarborough General Hospital, North Yorkshire

Wales
  • Prince Charles Hospital, Mid Glamorgan
  • University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff
