First formal scientific review
The Breakthrough Research Centre had its first ever formal scientific review in 2004. In this review, the Research Centre was praised both for its excellent progress since it opened and for its future research plans.
What is a formal review?
Every five years, the Breakthrough Research Centre undergoes a rigorous scientific review to scrutinise the research that takes place there. The review, which took place in 2004, was conducted by an independent panel of international scientific experts.
These reviews are important as they are a way of formally and independently assessing the quality of research, which gives assurance to Breakthrough and its supporters that research funds are
being well spent.
Preparing for the review
A huge amount of work went into preparing for the
review.
It also included details about how different staff members are involved in each project, how much each project will cost and what methods they will use to achieve their five year goals. The reports were delivered to Breakthrough in March. Each project was then confidentially reviewed by up to five independent referees who are eminent international scientists in the field of breast cancer research.
These reviews informed the judgements of the Scientific Advisory Committee, a panel of six world-renowned scientists, who carried out the review in June.
How the review was carried out
During their two-day visit, the committee members heard presentations from each research team and were able to meet the staff at the Research Centre. In considering the information collected, the committee assessed the progress, quality and feasibility of the proposed research and funding requests.
Outcome
The Committee was extremely positive about the excellent quality of research carried out at the Research Centre to date and they strongly endorsed the work proposed at the Research Centre for
the next five years.
The review has confirmed the high, internationally competitive standard of work coming out of the Research Centre, a tremendous achievement since it opened in 1999. We would like to congratulate all the scientists at the Breakthrough Research Centre on their hard work and fantastic success. We look forward to building on this success with further advances towards better diagnosis, treatment and prevention of breast cancer in the coming years.
