Our research centre
The Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre is the first dedicated breast cancer research facility in the UK.
Where are we located?
It is situated in the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Building at the Chester Beatty Laboratories at The Institute of Cancer Research. Our Patron, HRH the Prince of Wales, officially opened the Breakthrough Research Centre in December 1999. Together with The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital, it forms part of the largest cancer complex in Europe. Our aims
The aim of the Breakthrough Research Centre is to initiate and support a programme of cutting edge biological research to discover the causes of the disease, find methods of prevention and develop new treatments and more effective diagnoses.
Breast cancer is an extremely complex disease that arises in many different forms. We need to learn much more about the events that lead to breast cancer and those that govern its progression. This fundamental knowledge is the key to better diagnostic techniques and safe, targeted treatments for people with breast cancer.
Scientists and doctors working together
We believe that the best way to understand such a complex problem as breast cancer is to have world-class scientists and doctors with a broad range of specialities working together, sharing their expertise and focusing on breast
cancer.
Under the Directorship of Professor Alan Ashworth, there are currently nine different research teams within the Breakthrough Research Centre working together to understand more about breast cancer.
The research of the teams is diverse, with the scientists investigating all aspects of the disease process, from the very start when genetic changes occur in a cell to make it cancerous, to understanding how a tumour forms and how this tumour may spread around the body, to the development of new treatment strategies.
The scientists' research can potentially benefit people the world over and the Breakthrough Research Centre is already pushing the boundaries of breast cancer research, both in the UK and internationally. In its first formal scientific review, the Breakthrough Research Centre was praised on the excellent progress since it opened, and its internationally competitive plans for the next five years.
