Our research strategy
Our research strategy describes the ways in which we will deliver research funding over the next 5-10 years to address major scientific challenges associated with breast cancer.
The Breakthrough Research Centre is, and will remain, at the heart of our research portfolio. We will build on its record of success through further support of the centre and through the launch of two exciting new initiatives, described below.
In September 2007 we announced our plans for three Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Units in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, each of which will focus on a specific area of breast cancer research.
In Scotland, the new unit will aim to improve and develop treatments for breast cancer. In Manchester, the team will focus on developing new ways to detect and prevent early breast cancer. And the new London unit will investigate a poorly understood type of breast cancer called basal-like breast cancer, which is more common amongst young women and those of African origin.
Each unit will have strong links with a major cancer hospital or breast unit and research institute or university, and will have strong links with the Breakthrough Research Centre in London. By focusing on a specific area of breast cancer, these units will be in an excellent position to advance our understanding of the disease.
This programme seeks in time, to develop a new Breakthrough Research Centre of a similar size to the one in London.
Trained to a high level in the medical profession and excelling in laboratory research, the dual expertise of these unique individuals will be vital in the rapid development of new treatments from laboratory research.
Breakthrough's research strategy is outlined by the following principles:
The expansion of our research portfolio and the combination of our research efforts will ensure we’re in the best possible position to tackle breast cancer.

New Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Units
In September 2007 we announced our plans for three Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Units in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, each of which will focus on a specific area of breast cancer research. In Scotland, the new unit will aim to improve and develop treatments for breast cancer. In Manchester, the team will focus on developing new ways to detect and prevent early breast cancer. The new Breakthrough Clinical Researcher Programme
A major emphasis of our research is to bridge the gap between basic science and the patient – a two-way ‘bench to bedside’ approach that will deliver real clinical benefit. To do this, the Breakthrough Clinical Researcher Programme will attract and support committed clinical researchers of the highest calibre, who can undertake this challenge.Trained to a high level in the medical profession and excelling in laboratory research, the dual expertise of these unique individuals will be vital in the rapid development of new treatments from laboratory research.
Our key research themes
Breakthrough's research aims to improve our fundamental knowledge of breast biology and the genes involved in breast cancer, and to translate these findings rapidly to the clinic for the therapeutic benefit of all breast cancer patients. We will continue to pursue cutting edge research under three main themes:- early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer
- optimised treatments and new targeted treatments
- prevention
Our research principles
Breakthrough's research strategy is outlined by the following principles:
-
Mulidisciplinary
We will support multidisciplinary research that engages diverse expertise to look at breast cancer from several different angles. The Breakthrough Research Centre will remain the focus of all our research activities and through it, effective collaboration, education and information sharing will be vital for the further success of our research.
-
Bench to bedside approach
A major emphasis of our research will be to advance translational research – a two-way "bench to bedside to bench" approach that will deliver real clinical benefits, as we have already achieved with the launch of two clinical trials.
-
Cutting edge
Our research will advance the development of new technologies, ensuring that our research remains cutting edge.
The expansion of our research portfolio and the combination of our research efforts will ensure we’re in the best possible position to tackle breast cancer.
