These initiatives will support groundbreaking programmes into breast cancer research at strategically important locations in the UK.

The new Breakthrough Research Units and the Breakthrough Clinical Researcher Programme will support research that will improve our fundamental knowledge of breast tumourigenesis and translate these findings rapidly to the clinic for the therapeutic benefit of breast cancer patients.

Building on the success of the Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre housed in the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Building in London, these initiatives will support groundbreaking programmes to develop collaborative research into breast cancer at strategically important locations in the UK.

New Breakthrough Research Units and Breakthrough Clinical Researchers will forge strong collaborations with the Breakthrough Research Centre, which itself is integral to The Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, together forming the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. Today over 120 staff are working at the Breakthrough Research Centre in a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer research under the Directorship of Professor Alan Ashworth.
