Research costs

Since 1999, Breakthrough has awarded grants totalling over £35m. A large proportion (£26m) has been funding for the Breakthrough Research Centre, with additional support for major pojects such as the Breakthrough Generations Study and a research programme in Glasgow, led by Professor Barry Gusterson, the founding Director of the Breakthrough Research Centre.

Before 1999, £8.8m was awarded for the building of the Breakthrough Research Centre. Now, grants for ongoing research have increased year on year, with £5m being awarded for 2006/07.

In 2003, Breakthrough agreed to commit £5.1m over 5 years to the collaborative Breakthrough Generations Study, led by Professors Anthony Swerdlow and Alan Ashworth.

As our research portfolio grows with the launch of our new research strategy, we aim to spend £75m on vital research projects over the next 5 years
