Breakthrough's comment on research into global cancer survival rates
Newly published research in the Lancet Oncology journal highlights variations in cancer survival rates across 31 countries.
The CONCORD study used data on almost 2 million cancer patients fto compare 5-year survival for cancers of the breast (women only), colon, rectum and prostate.
Dr Sarah Cant, Policy Manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says;
“This study uses data which is almost a decade old and since then figures show UK survival rates for breast cancer have increased significantly. Around 80% of women in the UK are now expected to live for at least 5 years after a breast cancer diagnosis. This is thanks to better awareness, better breast screening and better treatments.
“We know that the earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment. That’s why we encourage all women to be breast aware and for those aged over 50 to attend regular breast screening.”
