Breakthrough's comment on Lord Darzi's Next Stage Review
Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says:
"Breakthrough Breast Cancer welcomes the commitment from Lord Darzi to focus on the quality of patient care and experience. Collecting measures of quality as well as financial performance is essential to ensure his plan fully supports the implementation of the Cancer Reform Strategy.
"Women with breast cancer must have the information and support they need to enable them to make informed choices about their care and where it is provided.
"We look forward to an enhanced role for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to ensure national guidance is provided and implemented on all aspects of treatment and care, not just drugs. Primary care commissioning must be supported by clear quality standards and good advice so patients, no matter who they are or where they live, have access to appropriate services and treatments.
"We will be pushing to ensure all Primary Care Trusts incorporate cancer into their plans based on the clinical pathways outlined in the next stage review.
"We welcome Lord Darzi's commitment to research and innovation as there must be nationwide access to clinical trials bringing research advances to patients."
