16 JUNE 2008
The Home of Cricket turns pink for breast cancer
The world’s most historic cricket ground, Lord’s, will become a sea of pink on the 16th June 2008 when Middlesex CCC play Surrey in their Twenty20 Cup match. Players will be wearing their specially designed pink kits to show their support and raise awareness for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Lord’s itself has followed suit, displaying pink flags around the ground and staff and stewards will be wearing pink.
Over 44,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK and money raised from the partnership will fund research into the causes, prevention and treatment of the disease.
Organisers are urging supporters of both clubs to get behind the initiative and come dressed in pink for the match, which will help to raise awareness of the disease among thousands of cricket fans. The club will also be selling limited edition pink kit and merchandise from the Middlesex club shop, with a percentage of the price being donated to the charity. Breakthrough representatives will be on hand to talk about their work and collect donations for the charity’s vital breast cancer research.
The partnership between Middlesex CCC and Breakthrough began last year and was such a success the club decided to take things a step further.
Turning Lord’s pink is by no means the only match being played in support of Breakthrough this season, with Middlesex also fundraising at several other focus matches during the summer including ‘Ladies Day’ on the 7th June 2008 when Middlesex play Essex. Women will receive FREE entry into the ground, to enjoy a fantastic day of cricket, a champagne reception and pampering treatments throughout the day.

Middlesex and England Cricketer Andrew Strauss comments:
“At first I think the fans were a bit shocked to see us all in pink, but as soon as they knew why, everyone was 100% behind us. Although breast cancer primarily affects women, thousands of men will support their wives, mothers and friends through the disease. We hope that by turning Lord’s pink we can raise awareness among men and women as well as lots of money for breast cancer research.”Turning Lord’s pink is by no means the only match being played in support of Breakthrough this season, with Middlesex also fundraising at several other focus matches during the summer including ‘Ladies Day’ on the 7th June 2008 when Middlesex play Essex.
