Step 1: Getting started

Where do I start?
Firstly, you need to find out what the current breast cancer issues are in your area. Here are some ideas:
- Your own experience is valuable – an idea for a campaign may come from your own personal experience of breast cancer.
- Read the latest issue of The Advocate (1085 kb)
– Breakthrough’s newsletter for CAN members. It’s full of news, stories and updates on Breakthrough CAN activities. - Visit or join your local breast cancer support group. You can find out what their breast cancer issues are and see if they would like to get involved in your campaign. Don’t forget to ask them to join Breakthrough CAN!
Macmillan Cancer Support have an up to date online database of cancer support groups on their website. - Read Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s The Best Treatment – Guidelines for Women with Breast Cancer. This is a guide for patients diagnosed with breast cancer to read about the treatment options available to them and the level of care they should expect to receive.
- Keep an eye on your local newspaper – it might feature a breast cancer story and give you ideas for your campaign.
- Have a look around Breakthrough’s website – you’ll find lots of ideas, draft letters and other resources. You can also find out about Breakthrough's key campaigning activities.
