CAN members attend European Breast Cancer Conference

This April, Pam Allinson and Shirley Garman, members of Breakthrough’s Campaigns and Advocacy Network (CAN), attended the European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC) in Berlin.

The EBCC is an internationally recognised European platform for exchanging information on advances in breast cancer, and this year’s theme was Together we will make a difference.

The Berlin conference allowed clinicians to get together with breast cancer advocates and scientists to discuss issues in treatment, research, detection and prevention, as well as breast cancer management issues.

Pam and Shirley attended lectures, workshops and debates in Berlin, as well as poster sessions. Of her experiences, Shirley commented, “I was amazed at just how much we were able to take in and, hopefully, use in our future campaigns”.

Over the four days, many sessions were provided. One talk focused on familial breast cancer and covered patient satisfaction with the cosmetic outcome of breast surgery. The European cancer organisation Europa Donna hosted a session entitled Biology, not chronology, driven treatment, which Pam described as, “both informative and, indeed, quite an entertaining session.”

Pam commented, “I was completely bowled over by the scale of this conference - I don’t know the exact numbers but rumours were that there were 3,000 delegates! “

Of the whole experience, Shirley commented, “the conference was organised brilliantly and we both learnt enough to keep us campaigning for many years to come! We both learnt so much and have been inspired to take things further.”
