Share your experiences of buying insurance

The charity the Genetics Interest Group (GIG) would like to hear from Breakthrough CAN and Genetics Reference Group members about any problems you might have encountered when applying for insurance cover due to having a family history of breast cancer.

GIG is a national alliance of organisations which support children, families and individuals affected by genetic disorders.

GIG intends to work with the insurance industry to develop standard insurance application forms for several hereditary conditions.  This will help applicants understand what information they will be required to provide about their family history, genetic predisposition and personal history of a disease when applying to buy insurance.  It will also help insurers to better understand the risk that an applicant will claim on their insurance.  The aim is to make the insurance buying process fairer and more transparent.

How you can help

If you have an experience of applying for insurance products such as life insurance, critical illness cover, or travel insurance you would like to share, please contact Benjamin Francis, Project Officer at GIG on 020 7704 3141 or ben@gig.org.uk.

What is the Genetics Interest Group?

GIG has a membership of over 130 charities that support children, families and individuals affected by genetic disorders.  Its primary goal is to promote awareness and understanding of genetic disorders so that high quality services for people affected by genetic conditions are developed and made available to all who need them.

You can find out more about GIG from their website at www.gig.org.uk
