GlaxoSmithKline

In 2004, GlaxoSmithKline, through its UK Corporate Contributions Programme, awarded Breakthrough a grant of £127,755.
This support is being be used to fund the work of Dr Nick Turner, Clinical Research Fellow at the Breakthrough Research Centre, who is investigating sporadic breast cancer.

Dr Nick Turner is examining whether sub-types of sporadic breast cancer cells respond to platinum based chemotherapeutic drugs. These drugs have already been shown to be successful in the laboratory at killing hereditary breast cancer cells, and it is hoped that this project can be developed to evaluate platinum based drugs in the clinic, for the treatment of sporadic breast cancer.

GlaxoSmithKline was also a major sponsor of the Breakthrough Biology of Breast Cancer Conference at the University of Sussex in 2004. The event provided rare and valuable opportunities for junior researchers from different institutes to present their work in a series of seminars and poster presentations over two days. Breakthrough believes that such opportunities encourage communication between scientists and health professionals, to disseminate research findings and promote best practice, which is essential in developing and delivering responsive and effective treatment to cancer patients.

Within the Corporate Contributions Programme, GlaxoSmithKline aims to support the advancement of knowledge and the education of the next generation of scientists. The current programmes includes an annual scheme that has seen £4.5 million awarded to over 50 medical research projects in the last ten years.
