Where it all started

Jill Johnson, £1,000 Challenger
"I visited the Research Centre to see how my Challenge is making a difference. We were so warmly welcomed by the staff and made to feel so special. Everything was explained clearly and simply. The scientists’ dedication was outstanding - for me it was a realisation that in the fight against breast cancer we have so many good guys on our side! It’s made my Challenge mean so much more."

The £1,000 Challenge is Breakthrough’s much loved, longest-running, fundraising campaign. Our original appeal, launched in 1991, called for thousands of people to raise enough to fund the building of a new and unique breast cancer research centre. The response to this call to action was outstanding and our new set of passionate fundraisers, our “£1,000 Challengers,” rose to the occasion in a bold and fearless fashion. Between them, they raised enough money to enable us to open the highly respected, Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre, in 1999. But the Challenge didn’t end there…

…. where it’s got us

Now that the centre is fully functional, we ask people to take up the challenge to fund the vital research that is carried out there. The centre is at the very heart of the Challenge. Challengers are able to go along to meet scientists and see, at first hand, the type of research work their personal Challenge is funding.

Jennifer Perera, £1,000 Challenger "I am one of the original £1,000 Challengers and have been involved for over 10 years. I survived breast cancer and wanted to move on, focusing on something that would make a lasting and very real difference to future generations."
