Students in industry set to raise £10,000 for Breakthrough

Each year, Hewlett Packard in Erskine, Glasgow receives an intake of students from the neighbouring Caledonian & Paisley universities. This year there are 35 students who are contracted for 13 months and placed in a variety of jobs from Engineering to Procurement. As part of their “Year in industry” as well as getting to grips with business, they are actively encouraged by the company to fundraise for the company’s chosen charity.

Employees (including the students) are asked to nominate a charity within the categories of Education, Youth, Disability/Health, Local/Scottish. The list is narrowed to five organisations and then to two, as employees vote for the charity they would like to benefit. This year, Breakthrough has been selected following the diagnosis of an Hewlett-Packard employee, Yvonne Ritchie, who died at the young age of 36. Yvonne’s name will appear on the Challengers’ Wall, which recognises the bravery and strength of those affected by breast cancer, and the enormous contribution of Challengers in funding our research centre.

The students are divided into teams and each team is responsible for a number of fundraising events. In the last 6 months, fundraising has included a Halloween bake stall and sponsored walk, Christmas bake stall and carnival, car wash, raffle, balloon release, football tournament, hike and 10k run.

So far we have received £5,000 (along with TAG, the other adopted charity) and in their remaining 6 months, they aim to double this amount! It seems that there is certainly an element of competition and each year, the students “take on” the previous year’s fundraising target!

Most of the students in their placement have never been involved in fundraising before but have been amazed by the fun they’ve had organising events, getting everyone roped in and really making a difference. Some hope to take their fundraising expertise back to their universities and join their local RAG!
